From the 40th reunion:

Gary Fuchsman checking in. I guess as we all start realizing that we are not as young as we used to be, reaching back to earlier years sounds like a good idea. I like the idea of a quick and easy get together at any local restaurant. If I can be of any help putting it together, let me know. Just a little about myself, married 36 years, two children, and two grandchildren. After Maryland Univ, purchased children's clothing store in Wildwood Shopping Center, across the street from WJ. By the way, both of my children graduated from WJ, and both married and both live in the area. Closed the store after twenty years to pursue my second career providing bookkeeping services to a variety of small businesses in the area, from my home office.

Hi Classmates!    Life has been kind to me and my family.  As I write this, I am still living in Vermont with my husband of 40+ years, on 18 acres of wooded wonderland.  This summer signals the end of my career as a business owner as I head into retirement.  Although, I have no plans to sit still.    I have spent the last 32 years owning and operating a specialty gift store located inside The Brattleboro Retreat, www.brattlebororetreat.org, a psychiatric and addiction treatment center.  It has been a challenging and fun ride but the time has come to move on.    I look forward to working on all my unfinished quilt projects, playing with our two adorable grandchildren, digging in the dirt, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the several hundred acres of trails all our neighbors have worked hard to establish, and kayaking every body of water still on the list.  Who knows what else will make itself available but I am up for it.    I hope this finds all my classmates and friends in good health and enjoying life. From the 40th reunion:

As one (or at most two) of you might recall, I was a future scientist type.  That ended my 2nd year at college when my organic chemistry professor called me one morning to tell me I hadn't "a snowflakes chance in hell" of passing his course.  My interest turned to public affairs.  I managed to graduate despite the distractions of the 60s, and (after a 4-F and some cornea surgery) ended up at law school with an eye (!) on changing the world from inside the power structure.  Yeah, right.  Ended up as a lifer bureaucrat and have lived for the last 25 years in the WJ school district.  Was at US Labor for 30 years - mostly legislation and regulation, and occasional stints for Dem administrations in quasi-political spots, on topics that have no sex appeal inside the beltway let alone outside, but which were really cool for about 20% of the total gig.  Did a short stint on capitol hill this year to help pass new mine safety legislation, and more curtain calls are always possible, but I'm more or less retired.  My wife of 30+ years (years of marriage, not age...) worked at Library of Congress until she retired last year (sorry, ladies...you had your chance).  Older child (she) finishing up pediatrics residency with mucho debt; younger (he) is a Russian speaking violinist waiter (don't ask) accumulating mucho debt.  You'll be happy to know that last time we were in Paris, I found (and sat on) Jim Morrison's grave - and I have a picture to prove it.

From the 40th reunion:

After graduating from WJ, I attended Hagerstown Business School .  This led me to employment at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center where I met my husband.  John and I were married in 1971 (35 years ago – hard to believe).  Cassie, our daughter, was born in 1974, eight days before John was discharged.  Two weeks later John started grad school at UVA.  We moved to Charlottesville (John’s home town).  We resided in Charlottesville for six years while John taught seventh grade English and I was a homemaker until we were called to the ministry in 1981.  This led us to spend three years in Fort Worth , TX , while John got his second Masters, this one in Divinity and I worked as a medical secretary.  We loved Texas but after graduation we moved back East realizing family was important and too far away.  We served two churches in Virginia and now serve a church here in Greensboro , NC .  We’ve been here for eight years.  I am now a certified medical records coder.  Since moving to Greensboro , I have been working for fourteen Urologists.  I love what I do and thanks to the government with all their regulations, I am always learning.
Cassie has been a real blessing.  She received her undergrad from Virginia Tech, married Steve and got a Masters from NC State in Applied Math.  She and Steve live in Boston , MA , where she works for The Lincoln Labs at MIT (a defense company) and Steve works for Wyeth as a research biologist.  They have too small boys.  The only complaint I have with my daughter is that she lives too far away and it is hard to be a doting grandmother from this distance. This tempts us to contemplate a move to Boston for retirement.  Burrrr!
Needless to say, our lives revolve around the church and the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are very busy.  I have worn many different hats being the minister wife: Pastor to the pastor, minister to young mothers and other women, babysitter, wedding coordinator, choir member, WMU leader, Sunday School teacher,  you name it - I have probably done it.  Count it all joy!
Life has been good to us and I hope for all of you.

As many have noted, real life often turns out different from what we imagined when young.  I grew up "knowing" I would be a teacher.  I graduated from U of Delaware in 1970 with a BA in English and a teaching certificate and began teaching 10th grade English outside Wilmington.  Early on I realized that, while the teaching part was pretty good, bureaucracies and I weren't really meant for each other, so I resigned after two years.  I then discovered my business and financial side and spent the next 29 years in the real estate and mortgage business with a focus on investment property.  I satisfied my teaching urge by teaching investment and property management courses to Realtors and University Continuing Education students.

I've been married since 1981 to Rich Abel, second marriage for both of us.  We've enjoyed a happy life sharing our interest in music, travel, and the outdoors.  Our (Rich's) children have grown up to be happy and successful.  Glenn is a career Naval aviator and currently Captain of USS New Orleans.  Sandy, a former Navy JAG, held positions at the National Security Council and the Pentagon, and is now Senior VP at a defense contractor.  We have 6 beautiful and talented grandchildren ages 2 to 9.

In 2001 we began the most fun and meaningful part of our lives when, thanks to good savings and a helpful early retirement option for Rich, we left the world of paid work to primarily dedicate ourselves to helping other people do better in their lives. We were accepted as Peace Corps volunteers with pending assignments, but both times Rich had medical issues that prevented us from departing.  Instead, we spent a year in Oregon (2003-2004) with Americorps/VISTA developing and implementing a business training program for disadvantaged people, a program still up and running today with more than 600 people served and over 250  businesses started.

The experience was so heartening that we signed up for another year - 2006-2007- this time for community economic development work in southern West Virginia, an area devastated economically by declining coal and timber industries, and a place where health and environmental risks are everywhere.  We worked hard and came away with a great respect and appreciation for the people and culture there.  Even now, not a week goes by that we don't think or speak about our experiences and hopes for the future of the people in that area.

Since then we've entered the "live fast" part of our lives - travel, family, and some volunteer work including tutoring, teaching ESL, and working on voting rights and government transparency issues.
We continue to live in Wilmington,  spend time at our place in Lewes, DE and winter months in Safety Harbor, Florida.  Otherwise, we travel A LOT.  Having been to over 70 countries, we joke about our to-be-written memoirs of "Rich and Becky Revolutionize the World," including Syria (before the war), Egypt (before the revolution), Tunisia (after the Arab Spring), Ukraine (shortly before Kiev was burning on CNN), Cuba (where locals told us that visiting America was only "in their dreams").  A few years ago we spent a month of study in Prague (earned 6 undergraduate credits!) and walked daily to school through the Old Town past the famous clock you see in travel brochures.  A while back we did a 30-day rail pass all with stop-offs all over over Canada and U.S. -  over 10,000 miles by train.  We enjoy visiting national parks and riding our bikes on long rail trails.  Right now we feel is our window of opportunity to keep on the move until we have to attend to health or welfare concerns of ourselves or my siblings.  Life has been lucky and good for us, and we wish the same to all WJ classmates.  See you at the Reunion.
