After graduation from WJ, I attended Montgomery College and got a job at the local telephone company. The Chesapeake & Potomac of Maryland was part of the original AT&T/Bell System. My first job was as a long distance operator -- the Big O, on a rotary dial black telephone. Do you remember? I continued to work for the local phone factory (33 years); Bell System, Bell Atlantic, and Verizon. I was married for 20 years and had 2 children, a son and daughter. I was also blessed with 3 beautiful and healthy granddaughters. I have lived in Maryland my entire life. No big travels! I joke that I haven't been outside the Beltway. I'm enjoying retirement, family, and especially my granddaughters. Right here in the State of Maryland. |

From the 40th reunion:Hi Tom Meleney (10/05/07),I can not believe you are on classmates. I went to your site and you look the same. I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. She was a very gracious lady. I was also amazed to see the photo of you with Pete Lucas and Bobby and the others. Wow!! Also, loved the photo of you and your brother. I still remember your brother. Was he trying to set your house on fire?. I live in Reston and have two daughters and two grandchildren. My brother and sisters still live in the area which makes me pretty lucky and my mom is still going strong. Sending a photo….I am a rules official for the USGA so that is why I am wearing this dumb jacket with badges. I will try to make the next reunion so keep me posted. Great to hear from you, |

U.S. Air Force
2016-01-04 12:13:03
I have officially retired from the US Army (that was on my biography from 2006) but I got recalled for duty in Mosul, Iraq in 2010-2011, working as an Engineer. I now work as a contractor for the USAF at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (called JBER for short), near Anchorage, Alaska. The contract will probably go for one year, although it is a 3 year contract, because every 12 months it gets a relook by the Air Force to determine if funding is available and if it should be continued or terminated. Frankly, I think the contract will likely be terminated in 2015, as the current Administration is cutting back on military funding. If that occurs, I will go to Delta Junction, where I have my permanent home (for the moment). I hope to return one day to the lower 48, and settle into the east coast, but my wife loves Alaska and cold weather. She was from Delaware, where I went to college (University of Delaware). I never made it back to the east coast after retiring from the Army back in 2000. Maybe one day. Closest I came was a one year contract working for the Navy in Philadelphia last year. That was also a three year contract, and it was terminated early due to lack of funds for continuation. As soon as the Navy contract was terminated, I jumped onto my current contract to go to Anchorage and work for the Air Force. Hard to believe it has been 50 years since I graduated from WJ. On a different note, back in 2006, the committee was looking for one of our classmates, Tamea "Tammy" Bottomley. Did they ever find her? I did an internet search and found her younger brother, John Bottomley (WJ Class of 1968), but he never replied to my emails back then. Just wondering. Tammy went to California after graduating from WJ, as I recall. Please stay in touch. I might be able to make the next reunion if I plan far enough in advance. After graduation, I went to school at George Washington U, and studied zoology and becoming a hippie. A lot happened in Washington, DC during those years which help shape my ideology. But, upon graduation, I was #6 in the first draft lottery and ended up pursuing the field of dentistry because it was a draft deferment. I meet my wife in my first year in Baltimore. She was a nursing student who was looking to marry a MD but settled on a DDS. I stayed in state, opened 2 practices and finally settled down with one in Columbia, MD. The town interested me because of my liberal roots. Raised 2 kids, now have 2 grandchildren and I am retired but teaching part time. Having a keen desire to scuba dive, I learned and that has taken me many places around the world. Having my father's eye for the art of photography, I have done work both underwater and above. My other primary interest I thank Larry Gordon for because he was kind enough to allow me to play golf with him at times. I think that I lead a full life and my free time now I dedicate to volunteer interests which are about to take me to Honduras to provide care for the needy. Both my profession and my background hayloft me in a position to pay back for all that was given me. |
