Musician Married 1 2016-07-02 18:35:01
Jim Skidmore and I married in September, 1970, and we settled in rural West Virginia in 1971. We've lived in the same house since 1977, enjoying the wildlife and a pace that is significantly slower (and healthier) than that found in Montgomery County, Maryland. Jim retired from his career as a radiologic technologist in 2010, and found a "second act" as a driver for Barbour County's  Public Transporttation. I began teaching guitar in 1976, added piano in the '90s, and added lever harp in 2009. I'm still at it, as well as playing traditional music with a group of local musicians.

Important changes to life here have been the addition of the lovely English daughter-in-law our son married in 2013, and the very functional knee replacement I added last year. (Friends, these are not the Golden Years; they are the Titanium Years.)

I was browsing through my WJ yearbooks recently, and came across an interesting autograph. Miss Diane Abelman, American History teacher, signed my 1964-65 yearbook:  "To Karen--who should spend more time with her history book and less time with her guitar." I'm attaching a photo of myself with my ever-present guitar. The gentleman standing to my right is then-Governor of West Virginia (and now U.S. Senator) Joe Manchin.

Business Owner www.southlandusa.com Married 2 2015-12-28 10:26:15
I have been married for 46 years, and have two sons and six grandchildren.  We all live in Mt. Pleasant SC after moving here 11 years ago.  Prior to that we lived in the Frederick MD area for 35 years.

I worked for Kodak for 21 years.  In my last position there, I held the position of Industrial Engineer.  I took an early buy-out to work in a business that we already started as a family.  We started doing commercial cleaning in 1986 and then ended up in the landscape business.  We sold the cleaning business ten years ago and now do landscaping exclusively.
Life is good, especially when you live near the beach.

retired; volunteer Married 2 2016-09-09 23:38:43

After WJ, I attended Smith College where I majored in history. On-campus research there led me to a PhD in U.S. History at GWU. That launched a very happy 40-year career educating girls and young women at National Cathedral School, Springside School in Phila., The Ellis School in Pittsburgh, and at Miss Hall's School in the Berkshires. Whether in the classroom or in the Head of School office, I had a wonderful time.

Richard and I are now retired and living in Center City Phila. during the cooler months and on Cape Cod in the warmer months. Our daughter and her husband live in Kansas City, MO where they are enjoying the city's renaissance. Son Tom and his wife live with their 4 boys (10 and under) in a high-energy (that means a lot of Legos, soccer stuff, and noise) household in the Boston area.

I decided that I was the kind of person who needs a project to be happy, so I am raising money for Smith through my class, and I serve as a Trustee at Rocky Hill School in Rhode Island. I feel honored to be giving back via the skills that I earned through experience. And we love to travel, having discovered the joys of cruising. (Also, I read for pleasure every day--a luxury I never thought I would have during those decades of 70-hour weeks I was complaining to my sister (Janet Pratt WJ 71) about the fact that I win the prize for most wrinkles among friends and family. She said: "Mary, those aren't wrinkles. It's just skin, badly folded." Perhaps it is, but the folds are from smiling, and I am grateful for an interesting and happy life. My WJ friends are part of the foundation of this blessing, and I am grateful to all of them for lessons large and small.

Retired from Smithsonian Married 2 2016-08-26 15:31:33

I retired from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) at the end of January 2015, after nearly 45 years! While at SITES, I developed and directed strategic initiatives and led its publications program. SITES publications are widely recognized for their excellence in content and design, and under my direction amassed hundreds of national awards. I collaborated with a wide range of trade and university presses to publish books that reached audiences far beyond exhibition tours. I also founded the American Alliance of Museum’s annual publications competition and served on boards and committees at the Smithsonian, the AAM, and the Museum Store Association. Wearing another hat, I served as liaison to the Office of Government Relations, ensuring a high degree of visibility, interaction, and relationship building efforts with Congress on behalf of the SI. I have a BA in History from Denison University and an MA in American Studies from George Washington University.

My husband Garrett and I have lived in Chevy Chase since 1976, where we raised our 2 now-grown children, Benjamin and Jane (a B-CC grad), who each have 2 kids. I love to read, travel, make crafts and quilts. It was an honor to serve as the 50th reunion chair, and I look forward to staying in touch with many of you.

From the 40th reunion:

I went to MJC for one year and decided that was not for me.  My parents owned a Business Machine store which I had worked in for more than a few times until closing it in 1999.  I got married in 1969 and had two children, Cory Mathew in March 1970 and Christopher George in June 1971.  My husband left me after the birth of our second son and was back on my doorstep six months later.  It wasn't meant to be so we split and he has since been married three more times.

Money, as I never understood, doesn't grow on trees so I worked for quite a few years in the micrographic field supervising the filming of all the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology cases as well as Senate and House documents.  I met my second husband thru a CB radio club which I used driving down Canal Road to Arlington, VA to a job also in Micrographics and had a third child, Justin Wayne in 1979.  Married Terry in 1984 and had a fourth child, Ashley Elizabeth.   Worked in Bethesda for Congressional Information Services as Supervisor in the Data Input Dept.  I suffered a TIA (stroke) due to a chiropractor manipulating my neck incorrectly and decided to become a stay-at-home Mom.

We lived for a short time in Athens, Texas but due to a failed land deal we came back to Maryland to "take care of business".  We have two and one-half grandchildren (expected in December) and a step-grandchild.  My husband fondly refers to me as "Bitch", most everyone else calls me Weezie.  All in all it has been a good ride.

From the 40th reunion:

Drove off to college with my brother, Joe, (WJ '65) to a small college in North Carolina. I wasn't too focused on studying so I did not graduate (but I did have fun). Returned home and worked for Univac for several years and moved to an apartment in Glover Park (upper Georgetown). That was fun also.

Then I met my husband at Nancy Jonucz Poole's wedding and we have been happily married for 35 years. We lived briefly in Falls Church, Rockville and Gaithersburg before moving to Plantation, FL 20 years ago. Plantation is a sleepy community just outside Ft. Lauderdale.

We have 2 beautiful daughters (yes, I am prejudiced), Karin (1973) and Katherine (1977). I was a stay at home Mom and loved every minute of it. Karin has been married for 2 years and lives in Plantation just 10 minutes from us - we love having her close. She works for a busy title company. Katherine graduated from Univ. of Central Florida in Marketing and is a Buyer for Macy's. She and her fiancé (they met at UCF) live in Atlanta and are going to be married October 14 - just a few short weeks away. The wedding is in Atlanta and Katherine is handling the last minute stress - she has done all the planning. I make periodic visits and write the checks! I'm making one last visit the end of September before we head up in October.

No grandchildren yet but we are (impatiently) waiting. We do have step-grandchildren and many grand-dogs and grand-cats. Plus, we just adopted a puppy who desperately needed a good home (we're suckers for that).

After my youngest reached 4th grade, I started back to work part-time so I could still be home after school and be the car-pool Mom. For about the last 10 years, I have been contracted to General Services Administration. We handle the leasing for Federal agencies in Florida (except the panhandle)- a small but very busy office.
