Retired Married 2 2016-04-05 16:43:02
Since the last reunion.  I retired from a stressful job.  Retirement lasted about 6 weeks until a customer who I had helped start up many years ago contacted me and said he had a sweet offer for me.  It was an outside sales job covering Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania with a vehicle, computer, phone, and office at home.  Thought I might try it for a year but it wound up lasting 5 plus years until November of 2015 when Masco Corp spun us off to a smaller outfit.  The new folks wanted me to become a 68 year old superman and that is when I said enough and retired for good, I think.  I have had other offers but I am still retired.  My wife of 41 years, Dolores, just retired from WABTEC on March 1, 2016.  Our two sons are in our neighborhood and we have three grandsons one block away.  We are headed for Tennessee to see friends and then on to our second home in Alabama.  We might be back in time for the reunion.  I have not missed one.  I would look forward to seeing some of you but if not, have a great time. Although I don't consider high school as the best part of my life, I have some great memories of my three years at WJ, especially playing clarinet in the band and working behind the scenes on all the theatrical productions through Semanon. People may remember me (or not) because I had an unusual first name -- Lovita -- that went well with my last name "Smith." I didn't mind changing either, one because it was too unusual and the other because it was too common!

After WJ I went to Hood College and became "Lisa" Smith, majored in psychology, and graduated in 1970; I later earned a Masters in Public Administration at American University. My job at the Immigration and Naturalization Service, ending as Director of Research and Evaluation, offered great opportunities including serving as a senior research associate on the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy staff, getting the opportunity for travel around the US and much of the world speaking on various immigration topics and doing policy relevant projectsI When the Department of Homeland Security was created in 2003 I moved to US Citizenship and Immigration Services. After retiring in early 2009 I continue to dabble in immigration policy issues and work as a consultant on immigration-related evaluations to Westat, a Rockville, MD social science research company.

In 1975 I married Milton Roney, and changed the Smith to Roney.  After 41 years we are still very happily married and living in upper Northwest Washington, DC. We have two wonderful daughters, both of whom did well attending DC public schools. Jessica graduated from Swarthmore College, got her Ph.D. In colonial US history from Johns Hopkins, taught at Ohio U, and recently got tenure at Temple University. She lives in Philadelphia, is married, and has a daughter, now 3-1/2 years old. Kristen graduated from Earlham College has worked on education studies and educational design at two major research firms. Following several years in the Boston area while her husband got his Ph.D. they are back in the DC area and have a 2-year-old daughter. We are very lucky to see both our granddaughters frequently and be part of their lives.

Milt and I have been involved with the local Chapter of Amigos de las Americas (a Peace Corps-like program for high school and college students in Latin America) since both Jessica and Kristen participated in AMIGOS starting some 20 years ago. I have also served on the International Board of Directors and am currently an Amigos Foundation Trustee.

Since I retired I have taken up water aerobics and exercise classes and taken and taught classes at our local Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program at American University. We have done a fair amount of traveling and among other travels enjoyed Baltic, Adriatic, and Oceania cruises. A highlight was a trip to Chile and Bolivia to stargaze the southern sky. Milt has several telescopes and a small observatory in the Shenandoahs; we have just bought land where the night skies will be even darker and more visible. After years of sailing we have turned to a little kayaking and still do occasional bicycling. But above all we enjoy playing with our grandchildren!
