Allen J. Brimmer, 62, a primary care doctor with Kaiser Permanente in the
Washington area, died May 16 [2010] at a hospital in Cambridge, Mass., after
a heart attack. He was a Chevy Chase resident.
Dr. Brimmer had been practicing in the Washington area since 1995. Before
that he'd been overseeing reproductive health projects in Tanzania for the
U.S. Agency for International Development.
He'd previously served as a clinical physician with the Barbados Health
Ministry and as a public health adviser in the Caribbean island nation of
Grenada. Before going overseas, Dr. Brimmer worked as a family physician in
the 1980s with Kaiser Permanente in the Washington area.
Allen Jay Brimmer, a native Washingtonian, was a 1966 graduate of Walter
Johnson High School in Bethesda. He received a bachelor's degree from the
University of Chicago in 1970 and a medical degree from the University of
Illinois in Chicago in 1976. He received a master's degree in public health
from Johns Hopkins University in 1986.
His marriage to Dolores Koenig ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife Margott Thorne of Chevy Chase; a son from his
first marriage, Charles Brimmer of Waukesha, Wis.; two daughters from his
second marriage, Dawn Brimmer and Nicole Brimmer, both of Chevy Chase; a
brother, Robert Brimmer of Elkton, Md.; two sisters, Patti FitzGerald of
Potomac and Donna Thewes of Laurel; and a granddaughter.
I first met Allen at Parkwood Elementary School. We all played together with all the Parkwood kids. He was such a smart guy. I am not surprised he became a physician and worked with underdeveloped nations. Certainly in keeping with his personality. My thoughts and prayers to his family on their loss of a valuable human being.

very sad to hear of Allen's passing. He had to have been the smartest math whiz at WJHS while I was there. If anyone knows where he went to college & got either his PhD or MD, and what his work profession was, please let us know. Thanks
