February 18th, 1948 - November 9th, 2017
From Jacque Crenshaw: She was one of my closest childhood friends and she was part of my wedding party. Her family was wonderful. Silly little thing but they taught me how delicious crisp potato skins with melted butter are.
We belonged to the same swim club and often played together there.
She was kind, loving and fun. One of the most wonderful people that I was privileged to know through the years

GRETZ MARCIA JEAN (Gaarden) GRETZ Died on November 9, 2017 in Silver Spring, Maryland. She was born in Takoma Park, Maryland on February 18, 1948 to Flora and Allen Gaarden, and grew up in Kensington, Maryland. Marcia graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1970 with a degree in Business Administration. After graduation she was employed as one of the first female supervisors in the central office of technicians at Bell Atlantic Telephone Company. While working for the phone company, Marcia met and married Denny Gretz in 1989. She retired after 30 years of service with Bell Atlantic and its successor companies. While working at the phone company, Marcia earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from Catholic University. She worked for worldwide adoption services and also volunteered with Hospice and the Shepherd's Table in Silver Spring. Marcia was a devoted Lutheran and member of Christ Lutheran Church in Bethesda, Maryland, and later, Resurrection Lutheran Church in Kensington. She enjoyed reading, travelling and swimming. Her favorite hobby in her youth was sewing. She won Blue Ribbons at the Maryland State Fair for her tailoring of suits, coats and swimwear. Marcia will be remembered for her intelligence, sharp wit, wonderful sense of humor and infectious laugh. Her family and friends were very important to her. Predeceasing Marcia were her beloved husband, Dennis Joseph Gretz, and her parents. She is survived by her siblings, Susan Young (George) of Punta Gorda, FL, Lynn Wood (Marshall) of Savannah, GA, and Allen Gaarden (Cathy) of Albuquerque, NM. Marcia is also survived by her stepchildren, Rich (Kim) Gretz of Prince Frederick, MD, Joe Gretz of Washington, DC, and Ray (Gail) Gretz of Severna Park, MD; along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank, for their many years of dedicated and loyal service, her kind and remarkable caregivers, Saffu Kamara and Molly Mafunga; and for his constant help and support, her nephew, Mark Gretz. In accordance with her wishes, Marcia's body was donated to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences for the advancement of medical science in Bethesda. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Remembrances may be sent to The Auxiliary of The Village at Rockville, A National Lutheran Community, 9701 Veirs Drive, Rockville, MD 20850; the Shepherd's Table, 8106 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20910; or a charity of the donor's choice.
