Classmates

The most important part of this effort is to reconnect with friends in the great class of 1966. As Baby Boomers, think about what we’ve experienced, from learning cursive with cartridge pens to posting Instagram images with our smart phones; from learning about JFK’s assassination during the school day to watching the Twin Towers fall on 9/11; and for many of us, going from worrying about prom dates to welcoming grandchildren into our lives. It’s an amazing time to be living! Let’s celebrate and share.

After having had the honor to serve as the MC at our 10 and 20 Year Reunions, I missed the 30th, when I lost my first wife, Barbi, and the 40th due my wife, Shirley, having surgery to remove a tumor from her femur, followed by six months of rehabilitation. I am pleased to report that I had the privilege to serve, once again, as the MC at the 50 year Reunion. It was a most successful and enjoyable affair, thanks to the hard work Andrea Stevens and the Reunion Committee.

After graduation from WJ, I went to the Univ. of Tennessee, majoring in Geography/Cartography. Married Barbi two days after Christmas 1969 and returned to UT. After that, we came back to MD, where I went to work for the Army Map Service only to be riffed exactly one year later, along with 100 others, due to DOD budget cuts. I spent nearly 40 years with the MD. Dept. of Assessments & Taxation, starting as a Residential Assessor and retiring as Assessor Manager. Along the way, I served as President of the MD Assoc. of Assessing Officers and the next 30 years as the Secretary.

Some of you might remember the band I was in during our Senior year – “The Extreme,” along with Bill Picon, Mark Pitzer, Jerry VanAken, Klaus Pawlitsky and John Crippen. After that, my "musical career" included a stint in the “Pride of the Southland Band,” and UT. As well as an R n R band there, and another here, during the summer breaks. Upon returning to MD., I hung up my sticks to start a career and family. I was a percussionist in a local drum and bugle corps for 15 years. From ’84 to ‘’96, I was a member of the “Redskins Marching Band.” Lately, I have been sitting down at my Roland Electronic Drum Set, making noise while playing music from my years as a "teen idol." Sad, isn't it?

In 1985, for the fun of it (it certainly wasn't for the $), I started DJ-ing at high school reunions, “Oldies” station pool parties, weddings, parties etc. After a year hauling the equipment around by myself, I took on a partner. Anybody remember "Dick Evans" - a DJ at WINX during the late 60s-early 70s? He is also the father of my son's best friend, which is how we met. Our first job together was the WJ Class of '67 Reunion, which was chaired by Mary Jane Flamish, who just happened to have been one of the Go Go Girls when the Extremes had center stage at the 1966 WJ BEACH BALL.

I joined the Freemasons in 1974, so I could do something with my father, while I still had the chance. I became very active over the years, eventually having the honor to serve as the Grand Master of Masons of the District of Columbia in 2004. During my term, Shirley and I travelled around North America and Europe, representing the Masons of DC. While in France, I was privileged to have participated in the 60th Anniversary of D-day celebration by laying a Masonic wreath, followed by remarks at the American Cemetery in Normandy. A truly special day.

This brings me to Shirley, my partner in life. We met in 1999, when a group of friends and I rode our bikes to Alexandria, VA to watch a parade. While crossing over the Potomac, we “bumped” into another group of bikers that Shirley was riding with. One of my friends struck up a conversation with Shirley and, when we got to Alexandria, came over to me and said, "Hey Lee. She's single." Well, as sometimes happens, one thing led to another and we were married in April 2001. Why she picked me (her first), I'll never know. Before we met, Shirley had been a busy woman. With a degree in biology, she worked in hormone research. During her spare time, she obtained several scuba diving certifications and a pilot's license, flying with the Civil Air Patrol. She was also a volunteer at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. If that wasn’t enough, she travelled, by herself, around Europe. Gutsy. Now she is living the "dull" life with me. We still ride our bikes. In fact, a few years ago, after she had recovered from her tumor removal, we participated in the "Shore Bird Century Ride" on the Eastern Shore, doing a one day, 100 kilometer ride, for charity.

We just built and moved into a new home at St. James Plantation, near Southport, NC. It is an all ages, active community with a marina, four country clubs, 81 holes of golf, private beach club, parks – one with an outdoor amphitheatre, another along the ICW, with a kayak launch - miles of trails for walking and BIKE RIDING, and many other opportunities for the physically active. All of which should keep Shirley and mw feeling "young" for many years to come. We hope.

Comment: Hi Classmates!    Life has been kind to me and my family.  As I write this, I am still living in Vermont with my husband of 40+ years, on 18 acres of wooded wonderland.  This summer signals the end of my career as a business owner as I head into retirement.  Although, I have no plans to sit still.    I have spent the last 32 years owning and operating a specialty gift store located inside The Brattleboro Retreat, www.brattlebororetreat.org, a psychiatric and addiction treatment center.  It has been a challenging and fun ride but the time has come to move on.    I look forward to working on all my unfinished quilt projects, playing with our two adorable grandchildren, digging in the dirt, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the several hundred acres of trails all our neighbors have worked hard to establish, and kayaking every body of water still on the list.  Who knows what else will make itself available but I am up for it.    I hope this finds all my classmates and friends in good health and enjoying life.

From the 40th reunion:

Hi Everyone.  I met my husband my first semester at Maryland.  We graduated, taught for awhile, and then opened a motorcycle shop.  He has been checking out your bio's and now believes me that although I'm a genius,I was only average in my high school graduating class. He went to Blair with Goldie Hawn, Ben Stein, Connie Chung, etc.and says our class has more famous people.

At Maryland I was in a sorority with Lorraine Thaxton, Jacqui Guinan, and Pete Lucas' and Earl Gronkowitz's wives.  I still meet up with Carol Horigan at Christmas when she comes home.

My son, Colin, lives in Silver Spring with his wife and two babies and works in our wholesale div.(Full Bore). My daughter, Lauren teaches in Wilmington,N.C., and did inherit the Esoteric party gene
