Classmates
The most important part of this effort is to reconnect with friends in the great class of 1966. As Baby Boomers, think about what we’ve experienced, from learning cursive with cartridge pens to posting Instagram images with our smart phones; from learning about JFK’s assassination during the school day to watching the Twin Towers fall on 9/11; and for many of us, going from worrying about prom dates to welcoming grandchildren into our lives. It’s an amazing time to be living! Let’s celebrate and share.

From the 40th reunion:After high school I attended the University of Maryland where I majored in drama until my senior year. It then occurred to me that I hadn't found a husband and didn't have a way to support myself; so, I became certified as a Secondary English teacher. I graduated in 1971, the year when there were 200 teachers for every position. I got my first job in Baltimore City Public Schools. Realizing that I couldn't teach English if my students couldn't read, I went on to earn a Master's Degree as a Reading Specialist at Hopkins while I was teaching in Baltimore . I then switched to Prince Georges County Public Schools where I worked as a high school reading specialist. I currently work as a full-time professor at Montgomery College where I teach college reading skills to under-prepared students. I have spent a total of 26 years teaching under-served students and I have found it very challenging and worthwhile work. I am grateful for my own education at Walter Johnson, where most of us took our education for granted (at best). On the personal side, after a brief 2 year marriage in my 20's which ended in divorce, I married my current husband, Art, in 1984. We had two wonderful girls when I was 37 and 39. I was lucky to be able to stay home and raise them for 8 years. The youngest just left home to attend Drew University in New Jersey . The oldest is finishing her senior year at Kalamazoo College . I was dreading having an empty nest. I got depressed and lost weight. My husband didn't get it. Now that both girls are out of the house, life is wonderful. I don't know what I was worried about. If I leave something clean, it stays clean. If we want to go out to dinner at the last minute, we go out. Meanwhile, my husband is a little depressed. Like some others of you, I began riding horses again when I was 50. I leased and now own a horse at Rock Creek Park Horse Center where I blissfully ride the trails and watch the seasons change. I've learned a lot from my horse about how to improve my relationships at home and at work. In high school I was in a small, pre-hippy "beatnik" group. I felt very much out of the mainstream. It has been amazing to read about so many people who also felt that way. I look forward to meeting my high school classmates at the reunion. |

For six years after graduating from the university of Maryland i worked for International Harvester truck division. But in 1978 i applied to AT&T for a sales job....that led to a 22 year career selling telecommunications services in washington dc to the federal govt. then transferred to NC to sell commercial accounts. The real reason I transferred to NC was to be with my new girlfriend after a pretty nasty divorce. I had rekindled a friendship from jr. high school in NC and wanted to see where things would lead. well Becky and I have been married now for over 25 years. But I did have three wonderful children with my first wife and they have really been a true BLESSING to me. My oldest is Kristin who lives in north NJ and has blessed me with three beautiful grands. My 2nd child is Kate and she just married last year and lives in Denver, Co. My youngest is Jonathan and he is 32 years old single and lives in Arlington, VA. I am semi retired after having three major hospital stays during 2014; hopefully 2015 will be a very healthy year for tom meleney. I loved helping the conmittee plan and pull off an awesome 50th reunion May 14, 2016. If you missed it then you missed a super time. Even my NC born and breed wife loved it. Thank you for everyone that attended and created this awesome weekend. |

From the 40th reunion: After WJ I went to MJC (now Montgomery College) until the summer of 1968.I did poorly, so I received a draft notice. I enlisted in the Air Force, left my disfunctional and abusive family home in mid-November 1968 for basic training. After tech school on aircraft weapon systems in Denver, CO, I was off to ... well ... the Republic of Vietnam Campaign. Spent 13 months there at a small forward air control base on the Mekong river, then spent the next 2 1/2 years in the Mojave Desert as an aircraft crash rescue fireman, as well as racing sports cars at Riverside Raceway, Ontario Motor Speedway, and other tracks. Interesting change from jungle to desert.
After leaving the USAF I came back to the Denver area, went back to college, and graduated (magna) with a BS in math. While still at school I worked as a student at NOAA in Boulder, CO, learning about radar and lidar (laser radar, basically) data acquisition, control, and digital signal processing. After graduating college in 1976, I went to work for NOAA full time doing more radar, lidar, and other types of remote-sensing research systems. I left NOAA to work for Data General as a systems engineer in 1977, but I missed the research environment and went back to NOAA in 1978, where I stayed until I took an early retirement in 2000. In the early 1980's I received some national and international recognition for my work, and I have received several patents for the that work. I still do radar/lidar systems engineering and digital signal processing as a consultant to government agencies and private corporations. I spend a lot of time doing music now, also. I play guitar and sing in 4 bands of different genres, mostly folk and folk-rock oriented. I was married in 1983 to Maureen, but we divorced in 1987, no children (we are still good friends, though :o) I married Anita and adopted her three terrific kids (1 early teen, 2 pre-teens) some years ago, and now that the kids are all out on their own, in various universities, etc, Anita and I live alone in the foothills above Boulder, CO, with few neighbors and lots of critters (deer, fox, coyote, bear, mt. lion, etc, etc). |
