Classmates
The most important part of this effort is to reconnect with friends in the great class of 1966. As Baby Boomers, think about what we’ve experienced, from learning cursive with cartridge pens to posting Instagram images with our smart phones; from learning about JFK’s assassination during the school day to watching the Twin Towers fall on 9/11; and for many of us, going from worrying about prom dates to welcoming grandchildren into our lives. It’s an amazing time to be living! Let’s celebrate and share.

Although I don't consider high school as the best part of my life, I have some great memories of my three years at WJ, especially playing clarinet in the band and working behind the scenes on all the theatrical productions through Semanon. People may remember me (or not) because I had an unusual first name -- Lovita -- that went well with my last name "Smith." I didn't mind changing either, one because it was too unusual and the other because it was too common! After WJ I went to Hood College and became "Lisa" Smith, majored in psychology, and graduated in 1970; I later earned a Masters in Public Administration at American University. My job at the Immigration and Naturalization Service, ending as Director of Research and Evaluation, offered great opportunities including serving as a senior research associate on the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy staff, getting the opportunity for travel around the US and much of the world speaking on various immigration topics and doing policy relevant projectsI When the Department of Homeland Security was created in 2003 I moved to US Citizenship and Immigration Services. After retiring in early 2009 I continue to dabble in immigration policy issues and work as a consultant on immigration-related evaluations to Westat, a Rockville, MD social science research company. In 1975 I married Milton Roney, and changed the Smith to Roney. After 41 years we are still very happily married and living in upper Northwest Washington, DC. We have two wonderful daughters, both of whom did well attending DC public schools. Jessica graduated from Swarthmore College, got her Ph.D. In colonial US history from Johns Hopkins, taught at Ohio U, and recently got tenure at Temple University. She lives in Philadelphia, is married, and has a daughter, now 3-1/2 years old. Kristen graduated from Earlham College has worked on education studies and educational design at two major research firms. Following several years in the Boston area while her husband got his Ph.D. they are back in the DC area and have a 2-year-old daughter. We are very lucky to see both our granddaughters frequently and be part of their lives. Milt and I have been involved with the local Chapter of Amigos de las Americas (a Peace Corps-like program for high school and college students in Latin America) since both Jessica and Kristen participated in AMIGOS starting some 20 years ago. I have also served on the International Board of Directors and am currently an Amigos Foundation Trustee. Since I retired I have taken up water aerobics and exercise classes and taken and taught classes at our local Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) program at American University. We have done a fair amount of traveling and among other travels enjoyed Baltic, Adriatic, and Oceania cruises. A highlight was a trip to Chile and Bolivia to stargaze the southern sky. Milt has several telescopes and a small observatory in the Shenandoahs; we have just bought land where the night skies will be even darker and more visible. After years of sailing we have turned to a little kayaking and still do occasional bicycling. But above all we enjoy playing with our grandchildren! |

Warmest greetings to my fellow classmates! As to what has happened in my life since 1966 -- After high school, I briefly attended the University of Maryland, then spent some time in the US Air Force as a crew chief and aircraft mechanic. My last duty station was in Myrtle Beach, SC – not a bad assignment at the time – and I stayed in South Carolina and earned undergraduate and masters degrees in business and accounting from the University of South Carolina, and became a CPA in 1975. While I am now retired, I worked for forty years in that field, spending thirteen years in public accounting with Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, and a local accounting practice; seventeen years in industry as a Controller with a Barclays Bank subsidiary and then as CFO of a small public finance company; and ten years with the IRS. While living in South Carolina, I met my wonderful wife, Sylvia, and we have been married since 1972. We have lived in Charlotte, North Carolina since 1977, and have one daughter, Lauren, who is an attorney with Covington and Burling in Washington, DC. I still enjoy music, and have continued to sing, play the guitar and bass, and attempt to entertain anyone who will listen, My current project is a show which I have put together singing and playing standards and “Sinatra type” songs. It is actually (somewhat) in demand at the local retirement communities (well -- the target audience for Sinatra songs has aged a bit)…… But, in any event, I have fun doing it, and my “older groupies” seem to enjoy it as well. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at our 50th reunion, and I look forward (perhaps a bit optimistically?) to our 75th!! |

We are sad to report that Anita passed away on 02/27/2020. Please see the "In Memoriam" section for an obituary and a place to add tributes. I retired this year from all my careers: part-time Family Practice MD, part-time computer programmer/analyst for the Epic electronic medical record at Seattle’s Group Health, and professional belly dancer. I graduated from Carleton College in anthropology-sociology in 1970, and spent a year living in Greece. I've lived in the Pacific NW (mostly Seattle) since 1971, except for my Family Practice residency in Utah. My husband grew up here, and isn’t willing to move anywhere else! Prior to starting medical school in 1979, I also worked as an editor for multiple publications, a firefighter for the US Forest Service, and the assistant manager of a bookstore. As part of my belly dance career, I won several dance awards and arts grants, and produced large theatrical and festival music and dance concerts. Now that I'm retired, I still don't seem to have enough time to do everything I want to do! |
